Block Paving Restoration & Re-Sanding Falkirk

Block paving is one of the most popular driveway and patio materials around Falkirk and Denny, and for good reason: it looks smart, it's durable, and it's easy to repair a small section without redoing the whole thing. The one downside is the sand between the blocks. Over time it washes out, gets swept away, or gets forced out by weed growth, and once that happens, the whole surface starts to look tired even if the blocks themselves are in perfectly good condition.

The joints do the work

Why Block PavingLoses Its Sand

Kiln dried sand sits in the joints between blocks and does more work than most people realise. It locks the blocks together, stops them shifting under weight, and blocks the gap weeds would otherwise use to establish themselves. Sand gets lost gradually through weather, foot and vehicle traffic, and, ironically, through pressure washing done with too much force or the wrong technique. Once enough sand is gone, blocks can start to rock slightly underfoot or under a car's weight, and weeds move in almost immediately.

If your block paving looks patchy, has visible gaps between blocks, or has weeds returning within weeks of being pulled, sand loss is almost always the underlying cause.

Clean, re-sand, treat

Our RestorationProcess

  1. We start with a proper clean of the existing surface, lifting years of grime, algae, and moss using pressure calibrated specifically for block paving, enough to clean thoroughly without blasting out any remaining sand unnecessarily. Full detail on the general cleaning side of this is on our driveway cleaning page.
  2. Once the surface is clean and dry, we apply fresh kiln dried sand into the joints, brushing it in thoroughly so it settles properly between the blocks rather than sitting loosely on top. This re-locks the blocks together and closes off the gaps that weeds and moss use to get established.
  3. Where we can, we finish with a commercial-grade weed treatment applied to the joints, which noticeably slows down regrowth compared to fresh sand on its own. Sand and weeds go hand in hand: fresh sand without treatment will still eventually let weeds back in, just more slowly than before.

Which job you need

Signs You Need Re-Sanding,Not Just a Clean

A standard clean lifts dirt and algae from the surface, but it won't fix block paving that's lost significant jointing sand. If your driveway ticks any of these boxes, restoration rather than a standard clean is likely the better call:

Visible gaps or dark lines between blocks where sand used to be

Blocks that feel slightly loose or move underfoot

Weeds returning within weeks rather than months of being cleared

A driveway that's been cleaned before but never re-sanded

If you're not sure which applies to you, send us a couple of photos and we'll give you an honest answer rather than upselling a restoration job you don't actually need.

Block Paving Restoration vs Full Replacement

Full replacement of block paving is expensive and, in most cases, unnecessary. If the blocks themselves are in reasonable structural condition and it's mainly the jointing sand and surface grime letting the driveway down, restoration gets you the vast majority of the visual and functional improvement at a fraction of the cost. We'll always tell you honestly if a driveway looks like it needs more than restoration can fix, but that's a rarer situation than most people assume.

How Long Does Restoration Last?

Properly restored block paving, cleaned and re-sanded with a weed treatment applied, typically holds up well for a couple of years before it needs attention again, longer than a standard clean without re-sanding. Shaded, heavily-trafficked, or older driveways may need attention a little sooner. It's a good idea to keep an eye on jointing sand levels over time and top up before things get to the point of blocks visibly loosening.

Pricing

Block paving restoration is priced based on the size of the driveway or patio, its current condition, and how much re-sanding is needed. A driveway that just needs a top-up in a couple of patchy areas is a different job to one that needs a full re-sand across the whole surface. We'll give you a proper quote once we've seen the job or had a description and photos.

Questions

FrequentlyAsked Questions

  • Visible gaps between blocks, blocks that feel loose, or weeds returning quickly after being cleared are the main signs. A standard clean won't resolve these issues on its own.

  • It significantly slows regrowth, especially combined with a weed treatment, but no treatment offers a permanent guarantee. Ongoing weed treatment every year or two keeps results looking their best.

  • It depends on the size of the area and how much sanding is needed, but most residential driveways are completed within a day.

  • Kiln dried sand comes in a range of shades, and we'll use a colour that blends naturally with your existing paving wherever possible.

  • In almost all cases, yes, significantly. Restoration addresses the sand loss and surface grime that usually cause a driveway to look tired, without the cost of relaying the blocks.
